Jackal and Hide

There is an old Kannada saying “Nanne nodu, yoga baruthe”. It means “See me and you will prosper”. This saying is believed to have been the words of a jackal! Hence there is a common mis-belief that looking at a jackal first thing in the morning brings luck and prosperity.

Most people who believe in this, keep a picture of a jackal right above the foot of the bed so that the photo of the jackal is the first thing they see when they wake up. However, one lawyer in the city decided to take the high road and keep a jackal itself!

He got the jackal when it was a pup and he had this habit of waking up in the morning, going out into the garden where his kids would be waiting with the jackal in hand, looking at the jackal first and then carrying on with his everyday activities. Once the jackal was seen by him in the morning, it was hidden away for the rest of the day in a small dingy cage. We don’t know if he got any prosperity or luck by doing that but the jackal certainly didn’t!

An animal activist who happened to visit the house, took note of the jackal and passed the information onto us. We went ahead with the concerned authorities and rescued the jackal from the lawyers house. All this while the lawyer maintained that there is nothing called a “Wildlife Protection Act 1972″ which prohibits him from keeping a wild animal at home!

The jackal was shifted over to the rehabilitation center and had to undergo several months of rehab to bring stability into his health and regularize his food intake.

Eventually, once it was confirmed that he could fend for himself, he was released back into the wild!
